Or is it possible that I purchase on steam and get a itch key or something? You shouldn’t download butler manually to run the itch.io app, the app will download and install its own copy butler to the correct place automatically. Most of all, stay on the trail as much as possible, only that will get you up to speed to catch up with yourself. Apparently not, because 'mirroring any tiles you place on one side of the map on the other side of the map' is precisely what it does (although it does ignore buildings, as those need more configuration and setup).
